JavaScript Backend Engineer

Location: Remote (Full alignment with US Time Zones required)

Note: This is a remote hourly contract position at $15 - $20/hour, with consistent full-time hours expected for placement at a US startup.

About The Role:

We are seeking a highly capable TypeScript Backend Engineer for a placement opportunity with a fast-growing US-based startup. This is a remote role requiring full working-hour overlap with US time zones.

You will work directly under the client’s CTO and Engineering Manager, contributing to backend systems, APIs, and data infrastructure. This role requires a high level of independence, strong communication skills, and the ability to take ownership of server-side architecture and implementation.

The position is backend-focused, primarily working with TypeScript and Node.js, and involves building scalable APIs, data workflows, and cloud-native systems.

What You'll Do:

• Build and maintain full-stack web and mobile applications using React.js, Next.js, Remix, React Native, and TypeScript
• Design, build, and maintain backend services using TypeScript and Node.js
• Architect and implement scalable APIs (REST and GraphQL) Design and optimize database schemas and queries for high-performance applications
• Build and maintain server-side systems, background jobs, and event-driven workflows
• Work with relational and/or NoSQL databases to ensure data integrity and performance
• Collaborate with frontend and product teams to define and implement API contracts
• Integrate third-party services and external APIs
• Contribute to cloud infrastructure deployments (preferably AWS)
• Implement monitoring, logging, and performance optimization best practices
• Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and architectural discussions
• Write clean, well-tested, maintainable backend code
• Contribute to technical documentation and system design discussions

Qualifications:

• 4–6 years of professional backend engineering experience
• Strong expertise in TypeScript and Node.js
• Solid experience building and maintaining GraphQL APIs (required)
• Strong database knowledge (schema design, indexing, optimization, migrations)
• Experience with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases
• Strong understanding of API security, authentication, and authorization
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
• Familiarity with Docker and containerized environments
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills
• Ability to work independently under direct collaboration with US-based leadership
• Full availability during US working hours

Preferred / Nice to Have:

• Experience integrating AI APIs (OpenAI or similar platforms)
• Experience integrating AI APIs such as OpenAI APIs
• Experience building or working with data pipelines or background processing systems
• Experience working in startup environments
• Experience with distributed systems and scalable architectures
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools

Compensation:

• Up to $20/hour
• Full-time hours expected (40 hours/week)
• Remote contract engagement
