Role Purpose:
The Management Accountant is responsible for delivering accurate, timely, and forward-looking financial insights. This role supports strategic and operational decision-making through budgeting, forecasting, performance analysis and business partnering. The role works closely with the Financial Control team and operational leaders to enhance financial visibility, drive performance improvement and support sustainable business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Modelling and Analysis
- Develop and maintain sophisticated Excel-based financial models for strategic planning, scenario analysis, and decision support across all 9 entities
- Build integrated 3-statement financial models (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) with dynamic assumptions and sensitivity analysis • Create rolling 13-week cash flow forecasting models incorporating operational data from Simpro
- Develop project profitability models incorporating labour, materials, subcontractors, and overhead allocation
- Build revenue forecasting models using Simpro pipeline data, historical conversion rates, and seasonality factors
- Perform scenario and sensitivity analysis (best case, worst case, base case) for major business decisions and investments
- Create workforce planning models linking headcount requirements to revenue projections and project schedules
- Develop pricing models for tenders and quotes incorporating margin targets, cost escalation, and risk factors
- Build capital expenditure and asset replacement models for fleet and equipment planning.
2. Budgeting and Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process across all 9 entities, coordinating inputs from operational managers and synthesising into group budget
- Build bottom-up budget models incorporating revenue by service line, customer segment, builder contracts, and project type
- Develop cost centre budgets with detailed assumptions for labour, materials, subcontractors, and overheads
- Prepare quarterly forecast updates (reforecasting) adjusting for actual performance and changing market conditions
- Develop long-term financial projections (3-5 years) to support strategic planning
- Present budget and forecast results to Directors with clear visualisations, insights, and recommendations
3. Management Reporting and Performance Analysis
- Prepare monthly management reporting pack with insightful commentary and analysis for Directors
- Perform detailed variance analysis (actual vs budget, actual vs prior period, actual vs forecast), identifying key drivers and trends
- Develop and maintain KPI dashboards tracking financial and operational performance metrics
- Analyse profitability by entity, service line, customer segment, and project type
- Identify trends, risks, and opportunities through data analysis and present findings to stakeholders
- Prepare ad-hoc analysis and reports as requested by Directors and operational leaders
- Benchmark performance against industry standards and competitors where data is available
4 Job Costing and Project Profitability Analysis
- Analyse project profitability using Simpro job costing data, identifying trends and drivers of margin performance
- Review work in progress (WIP) and contract asset/liability positions for construction projects
- Identify underperforming jobs and provide analysis to support operational improvement initiatives
- Build margin analysis models by customer, project type, and service line to identify profitability drivers
- Analyse builder contract profitability and support contract negotiations with financial insights
- Monitor labour productivity and utilisation metrics, providing insights for workforce optimisation
5. Business Partnering and Decision Support
- Act as a trusted financial advisor to Directors and operational leaders, providing commercial insights and recommendations
- Prepare business cases and ROI analysis for capital investments, new service lines, geographic expansion, or acquisition opportunities
- Support pricing decisions with cost analysis, margin modelling, and competitive positioning insights
- Provide financial analysis for make vs buy decisions, insourcing/outsourcing evaluations, and operational changes
- Translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders
- Participate in operational meetings to understand business drivers and provide financial perspective
6. Collaboration with Financial Control Team
- Work closely with the Financial Control team to ensure timely and accurate financial data is available for analysis and reporting
- Review month-end results prepared by Financial Control, providing analytical review and identifying any issues or anomalies
- Coordinate timing of management reporting with month-end close schedule
- Provide input on chart of accounts structure and reporting requirements to support management analysis needs
- Collaborate on system improvements and integration between Simpro and Xero to enhance reporting capabilities
- Support year-end processes by providing analysis and commentary for financial statement preparation
7, Systems, Tools and Process Improvement
- Develop automated reporting solutions using Excel (Power Query, Power Pivot, macros) to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort
- Create standardised Excel templates and models with appropriate controls, documentation, and version management
- Extract and transform data from Xero and Simpro using APIs or exports to build comprehensive reporting datasets
- Identify opportunities for improved reporting, analysis, and decision-support tools
- Document financial models with clear assumptions, instructions, and methodology notes
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Economics, or related field
- Professional accounting qualification (CPA, CA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) - completed or near completion
- Xero cloud accounting package experience
- Minimum 3 years' experience in management accounting, financial planning & analysis (FP&A), or commercial finance roles
- Strong background in financial modelling, budgeting and forecasting
- Experience preparing management reports and executive-level presentations
- Multi-entity or group reporting experience
- Variance analysis and performance commentary
Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills (Mandatory):
- Expert-level proficiency in Excel financial modelling - this is a core requirement of the role.
- Advanced formulas: INDEX/MATCH, SUMIFS, SUMPRODUCT, OFFSET, INDIRECT, XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays.
- Financial functions: NPV, IRR, XNPV, XIRR, PMT, depreciation functions.
- Data analysis tools: Pivot Tables (advanced), Power Query (Get & Transform), Power Pivot / DAX
- VBA/Macros for automation, custom functions, and user forms (highly desirable)
- Data visualization: Dynamic charts, sparklines, conditional formatting, interactive dashboard design.
- Best-practice model architecture: Clear separation of inputs, calculations, and outputs; logical structure; error checking.
- Model audit and review techniques to ensure accuracy and integrity.
Forecasting and Modelling Expertise:
- Proven track record of building integrated 3-statement financial models from scratch.
- Experience with driver-based planning and rolling forecast methodologies.
- Scenario planning, sensitivity analysis, and Monte Carlo simulation (desirable).
- Cash flow forecasting and working capital modelling.
- Valuation modelling (DCF, comparable analysis)
Systems Knowledge:
- Experience with cloud accounting systems (Xero).
- Ability to extract, transform, and analyse data from multiple systems.
- Experience with job costing/project management systems (Simpro, Buildxact, or similar).
